Takapuna Landscaping Project

Tim & his team are based on the North Shore, so naturally he knows his way around the different suburbs and has developed an understanding on what different customers need. His team have services both Takapuna, Milford and even worked as far north as Mill Water and Whangaparoa. Gold Leaf Landscapes is known around this area as a respected landscaper, it’s a tight knit community around the shore and it’s not uncommon for Landscapers, Builders and other tradies to get referred onto more jobs.

The Project Brief:

We were asked by a couple who had recently bought, to come around and have a look at the property to go over some ideas. The customers owned a recently renovated 80’s home that had some work done to it in the past. This included a swimming pool and pergola. The owners wanted to build something that was more for entertaining when guests came to visit, that was visually appealing and also low maintenance.

The drive way is very long and goes from the road along the house toward the back and joins the garage. This is where a large unused lawn area, which get’s all day sun is a big patch of dirt and grass. After the initial consultation and discussing more with the owners, Tim and the team decided on the following:

Lay a new driveway: This would make the entrance to the house more pleasant and line the driveway with plants

Create a relaxing space directly outside the kitchen in the picture above

Build a premium lawn at the south of the property, a place for the owners two dogs to play. One is a Bernese mountain dog so he needs lot’s of space to roam around

Surrounding the premium lawn create an edible garden. All of this would also be made low maintenance with an irrigation system installed

For anyone who has to work outside like an landscaper or builders. The weather is seldom on your side unless it’s during summer. The owner’s booked this project in during a fairly wet Auckland winter, so there was hold ups with work but also getting contractors in as well. Upon ripping up the driveway a new storm water drain had to be installed to make the water run off down under the driveway to the road. Cutting the concrete from the driveway and getting back down to trucks was another issue as the driveway is quite narrow to navigate.

Luckily Gold Leaf Landscapes have good relationships with contractors who are reliable and able to complete a job, no matter what the weather throws at us.

The Final Results

After persevering through the weather, the driveway came up very nice. Tim had to go back and do some acid washing to get this desired finish. Customer is happy with how it turned out especially with the plants installed by the fence

The back garden is equally impressive and is standout feature. The dogs get to enjoy a premium lawn and the Tim made some purpose built plant boxes for the edible garden.

So far we’ve planted olive trees, feijoas, avocados, plums, grape vines, standard vegetables, citrus and blueberries. Maintaining this garden is very simple and won’t require much ongoing garden care

The Chill Out Area: The standout part of the project is the smallest, but has in my opinion the biggest impact. Compact, simple and is a striking centre piece of the outdoor space. As you can see form the before images, this area was dead space with no real purpose, by covering it with some artificial lawn thanks to Gameon Turf. The owners are able to use this area in the morning to read newspapers and enjoy a coffee.

Investment range of this project: $120,000 – $150,000

The owners are over the moon at the end result and it is easy to see why. Gold Leaf Landscapes have delivered on a project under some wet conditions that pushed progress back a bit. Overall each area of the outdoor space has a purpose and flows nicely with each other. From the newly laid entrance driveway, to the plants lining it down to the lawn area past our favourite chill out spot. Not only does this enhance the feel of the property one can assume the value of the property has increased too.
